I had a discussion with a member the other day regarding sugar substitutes. The gist of the conversation was that they were using sugar substitutes in their coffee as an alternative to sugar. I warned that in some circles sugar substitutes are considered worse than actual sugar. They were of the belief that the substitutes were better for you.
Not only are artificial sweeteners not better for you from a chemical perspective, there is evidence that they evoke the same blood sugar “spike” (or insulin response) that sugar does. What you are looking for is a natural sweetener that is low on the glycemic index. The absolute best is Agave Nectar which I believe can be found at Costco, Whole Foods and Central Market. The next above that is honey.
There is an excellent article on this subject at ExperienceLife.com. There are other good tips in this article. The only one I disagree with is the part about Whole Grain Breads.
